Specialist licensing law firm Poppleston Allen was the headline sponsor of Best Bar Nottingham 2018, culminating in a glittering awards ceremony at Nottingham Trent University.
Best Bar None is a national initiative supported by the Home Office that is designed to acknowledge and reward safe and well run licensed premises.
For the last five years the scheme has been run in Nottingham city centre by the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID).
In order to receive the accreditation, premises have to complete an assessment which demonstrates they have appropriate and effective policies and procedures in place to prove that they are safely operated, particularly in the areas of the protection of children and emergency procedures.
Premises which gained accreditation received either bronze, silver or gold based on their score in one of six categories:pub, bar, nightclub, restaurant, cocktail bar and independent operator.
And for the second year running, Nottingham’s oldest gay bar was crowned top of the pubs.
The New Foresters, in St Ann’s Street, was named overall winner of the Nottingham city centre Best Bar None awards. It also scooped the award for best independent venue; again for the second year in a row.
The LGBQT-friendly pub received top scores in its assessment. Judges particularly praised the passion, enthusiasm and safety and noted that staff are “valued like members of the family” and customers are cared for over and above what’s expected.
James Anderson, a partner at award sponsors Poppleston Allen, added: “The overall standard was extremely high in all categories, reflecting the huge effort that many of Nottingham’s venues put into managing their operations responsibly.
“Having 76 venues achieving the gold standard only reinforces the commitment of local businesses to achieving the highest standards to ensure that Nottingham city not only has a vibrant night time economy but is also recognised as safe area for residents of the city and visitors to enjoy.”
This year a record 85 city centre venues gained Best Bar None accreditation – with 76 receiving the top gold award and the remaining nine securing silver.
